Vorkuta story (prisoner's story)
Not far from southeastern Vorkuta, we built a new mine after the war. There were two monks in our team. On Sundays, these two brothers refused to work, for which they were very often and severely beaten. They have already visited many camps and were thrown from one camp to another. Nobody wanted to have them. But the new head of the camp decided to end them.
One Sunday, when the faithful again refused to work, the prisoners saw that among the guards there were six instead of two shepherds, and besides, they were hungry. The head of the camp ordered the monks to fail. The prisoners held their breath, everyone knew what that meant.
Both monks: an old man in front, and a young man behind him, left the row and passed through the gate, heading for the tundra. Then the hungry dogs were started on believers. When the monks heard them being chased by teeth grinding and loudly breathing dogs, they stopped and turned toward the dogs. One of them, who was younger, prayerfully crossed his arms over his chest, the second, the eldest, prayerfully lifted them up. The monks' faces turned up at the gloomy, cloudy sky.
Everyone knew that in a couple of seconds the dogs would overtake the brothers and tear them apart. Many prisoners turned away in horror, covered their eyes with their hands.
But what is it? Hungry dogs, reaching the monks, suddenly rushed to the side, circling around. Then their confusion ceased, and the initial angry barking turned into a joyful screech. Dogs, wagging their tails, crawled on the ground around the praying monks. Finally, they both began to lick their feet. When the angry dog barking and grinding of teeth stopped, the prisoners of the camp heard how both brothers sang a prayer. To many came the words "My queen, offering my hope to the Virgin." The prisoners and some of the guards in horror began to be baptized, many cried.
The camp leader silently left. Finally, one guard called the dogs back with a whistle, and ordered the monks to return to duty.
“At this moment,” the eyewitness writes, “I realized that there is a Force that is stronger than any earthly forces.”
