The human meaning of the baptism of the Lord
We all know that the reason for the celebration of one of the Epiphany celebrations - the appearance of God by man in the world, the feast of Baptism, was an event described by the evangelists: when the prophet John called on the people to come to him on the Jordan and repent from their sins in order to be ready for entry into the kingdom of God, Jesus came there.
Through the baptism of repentance in the waters of the Jordan, Jesus confirmed: I am with them, with these people who have come to repent and bathe, I am for them and for their sake. The meaning of the Baptism of the Lord is a human meaning, simple, sober, even utilitarian: I was born in a centrifuge called “this world”, and I realize what a tragedy this is, how “this world” lies in evil and sin, forcing my good intentions, the best in me - this time (and such awareness is already quite a lot, those who know the tears of powerlessness in front of the cross and the Gospel in confession know this ...). I want to be with my neighbors, without them, alone, in a speculative "cosmic" emptiness, my real life turns into a virtual, into a simulacrum, into a substitution - these are two. And this step (He Himself made it at the age of thirty and then did not stop; in fact, all the main events that the evangelicals speak of after the Baptism) is a step towards the practical change of HIMSELF, these are three. About this - all the parables and all the commandments of Christ. About this - all that He did before and after death on the cross, and still does. In other words, not having a canister of baptismal water taken up will bring you closer to God, and not diving into the midnight hole, with a triple crucifixion, will you plunge there or take a glass of pepper pepper “for sugars” - but fulfillment of the commandments. And no other way. And the commandments are simple: reconcile with the offender and forgive him. Doing dirty tricks - stop doing it. Have something to share with the hungry and naked - share. Make your neighbor feel brighter and more joyful. Love God and this very neighbor as yourself.
Somehow it’s not “Orthodox”, somehow Protestant, somehow “primitive”, you say? And I will answer: do you think so? So stop "thinking" - and try to do business. And you will see how difficult it is - to blood, to death .... But, thank God, it’s not until OUR death — until the death of that “old man” inside us, that of our rotten “I”, who prefers not to do anything, to swim in any course, including along the rutted “church”, if only do not change anything in yourself, in your worldview, in your heart, do not make any practical efforts to enter the Kingdom of God. In that Kingdom, in which Christ the Lord alone and calls us all, “in the Jordan, we will be baptized the willful of our salvation for our sake”.
